The History of Aries Zodiac Sign
The Aries zodiac sign is a figure removed from the physical constellation of Aries. It represents the longitude travelled by the Sun in about 30.4 days, starting at the vernal equinox – the start of spring. It occupies position 0° on the zodiac wheel.
The name of the sign is derived from the fact that the start of the sign of Aries was in the same location as the constellation of Aries' projection, when the zodiac system was devised in Babylonia some 2,500 years ago, during "The Age of Aries." The constellation's projection moved due to precession, but Aries' sign stayed where it began at spring's first day.
The constellation of Aries, like all other constellations, was created in the sky at night to tell a story. It was named after the flying ram, which played an important role in one of Greece's ancient myths. The constellation of Aries does not represent a ram to every culture. The Chinese, for example, consider the constellation to be two pairs of inspectors, while it is a porpoise on Marshall Islands.
Mantra and Purpose
The Aries mantra, which includes the battle cry and the manifestation of birth, expresses this: I am.
The purpose of the Ram is to promote individual expression and self-authority.
In order to clear a path for others, Aries are the trailblazers, going into unknown territory in order to blaze a route for others.
Because we all have a sign in our birth chart, we can look to the house that Aries rules to discover the specific aspect of our life that we tackle in a direct manner, or where we need to summon Ram's martial energy for mastery.
Aries are drawn to any activity that tests their limits, for the purpose of expanding their knowledge about themselves and their embodiment.
Extreme sports and hazardous hobbies provide Aries a way to release energy and desire for adventure.
